Tasting notes

Deep color with violet highlights. The expressive, airy nose opens with aromas of blackcurrant, peony and licorice. The palate is ample, full and creamy. Acidity and tannins meld, giving the wine its verticality. The long finish is dominated by smoky, black fruit and mint aromas.

Vineyard

Vineyard size: 81 hectares
Soil composition: Clay and limestone soils.

Winemaking

Fermentation container: Vinification in concrete vats, 40% in Dolia (concrete amphorae)
Maceration technique: 4 weeks on the skins for extraction.
Aging: Oak Barrels
16-18 months with 50% new oak barrels, 35% concrete amphoras and 15% one year old barrels.

Heritage in the vineyard

Domaine

Jean-François de Pontet, as many high society aristocrats sought exciting opportunities in the Médoc. Once Grand Squire for Louis XV, he became the Governor of the Médoc. In 1705, purchasing land North of Pauillac. He then acquired an estate in 1757 in an area called Canet. In 1781, the estate became known as Château Pontet-Canet. The estate was purchased by Guy Tesseron in 1975.

Environmental practices

Starting in 2014, the first hectares were converted to biodynamic agriculture as a trial run. Shortly after the entire state was converted. In 2010, becoming organic certified and biodynamic. To avoid heavy compaction of the soils, the estate uses horses to work the soil as well as apply herbal treatments.
